My earliest known ANDERSON ancestor is Azariah ANDERSON, born about 1766 somewhere in South Carolina. His wife Rebecca was also born in South Carolina about 1765. I believe they moved to Williamson County, TN, sometime between 1801 and 1806 (one son was born in SC about 1801 and another in TN in about 1806). There are references to Azariah in various Williamson County records, including tax list, marriage books, court records and the U.S. Census. A son, Abraham, married Betsey Merchant there in 1813. He died in about 1815 and Azariah and Abraham's father-in-law were executors of his modest estate. Records also mention an Azariah ANDERSON marrying Elizabeth GLOVER in 1824. I suspect this Azariah to be a son of the elder Azariah. There is no record of Azariah or his family in Williamson County after 1824. Spence's "History of Hickman County" states that Azariah ANDERSON was an early settler on Fall Branch of Swan Creek, Hickman County, TN in about 1825. Two son's, "Whig" ANDERSON and Azariah Jr. were also mentioned by Spence. There is no other record of an Azariah Jr. In the 1850 Census Azariah was living next to James B. ANDERSON. Azariah and Rebecca were at this time 84 and 85 years old, respectively, and Rebecca was blind. They owned no land. I have concluded that James B. Anderson was a son of Azariah and Rebecca. Edward ANDERSON lived on a neighboring farm and was born in South Carolina. I believe he too was Azariah's son. There was no reference to either Azariah or Rebecca in the 1860 Census, indicating their probable death in the mid 1850's. Their children included:
